Reducing Children's Exposure to Secondhand Smoke Training
Course Information

This one day course is essential for those who would like to increase their own (and other people's) awareness of the effects of secondhand smoke, particularly to children's health.  The course offers practical tips on how to raise the issue of secondhand smoke tactfully, and how to motivate and support people to make changes to reduce children's exposure. The course is open to anyone who has contact with parents, grandparents and families in Newcastle under Lyme and the Staffordshire Moorlands, including Midwives, Children's Nurses, Health Visitors, Children's Centre Staff, Home-School Link Workers, Fire Service Technicians and those from other community settings.

Secondhand smoke means involuntarily breathing in other people's tobacco smoke.  Research over the past twenty years has consistently demonstrated the serious health risks of exposure to secondhand smoke.

• Evidence suggests that as many as 12,000 non-smokers die each year in the UK as a result of secondhand smoke.
• Almost 42% of children are exposed to secondhand smoke in the home, and as a result, 17,000 under fives are admitted to hospital each year.
• Many parents are unaware of the true risks to their children from exposure to secondhand smoke.

The course aims to:
1.    Increase awareness about the effect of secondhand smoke, particularly to children's health.
2.   To equip participants with the knowledge and skills to help them undertake brief interventions with parents/carers to help reduce children's exposure to secondhand smoke inside and outside the home.
3.   To familiarise participants with the Five-Point Plan that can be used with parents/carers when undertaking brief interventions aimed at reducing the effects of secondhand smoke in the home.
