Glossary

The lack of a common language among people who work with children and young people can be a barrier to working together effectively. A glossary has been produced for managers and practitioners from different backgrounds working in multi-agency settings to promote and facilitate communication and understanding.

The benefits of a common language include:

A better understanding between practitioners and agencies of each others' values and roles
Valuing the contributions made by different practitioners
Avoiding or reducing misunderstandings between practitioners
Increased likelihood of achieving the five priority outcomes for children, young people and their families.

Agencies can ensure that the common language becomes well-established in Staffordshire in a number of ways. It needs to be available to all and actively promoted by managers. These include using the glossary:

In training courses
As a part of Induction for new staff
To develop the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge of the Children's Workforce
As a reference document in all places of work
In presentations
