April 2008 blog!

Since my last blog, two dates have been set for consultation days; these are to hold big events where you can have your say and help shape the services that you get! These two days will be looking at the five outcomes which I've mentioned here before and asking about 100 - 150 children and young people about learning in the future and what it should look and feel like and also about youth services, benefit advice, education, employment. Professionals call these two pieces of work 'building schools for the future' (BSF) and the 'integrated youth support service' (IYSS).

The 2 dates are Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th July and will be held at Drayton Manor Park. Tuesday will be for secondary school age and the Wednesday for primary school age - whilst most of the children and young people will be from local schools in that area, (Tamworth) other groups are welcome to join us; local youth clubs and pupils who get their education at alternative centres will also be coming along.

There is going to be a review of services for children with disabilities, called 'Aiming High' and a one day event was held in March to look at this; I'll be working with others to make sure that children and young people have the chance to be involved in this and will keep you informed here.

The work of the shadow trust board - VIA, Voice into Action has come to it's year end, so a great big THANK YOU to all of the members who have worked so hard over the last 10 months or so! This month they made a presentation to members of the Trust Board about Staffordshire Children and Young People's Plan. Everyone enjoyed it - VIA had developed some questions and researched them with their friends. They showed us some fascinating statistics about how many people knew about the plan and made some suggestions on how to advertise it. For me though, one of the most interesting comments was made by the youngest member of the group, Josh, who bravely told us actually children and young people don't really want to read or look at plans - what they want to see is action…………………………………
