I've been away from my desk for some time, which explains why there's been no blog for a while!
As promised in my last blog, my annual report is here; I kept it simple, as encouragement for people to read it! 2006-07 Annual Report and Recommendations
The Shadow Trust Board has been meeting and they've called themselves VIA - Voices Into Action! They have agreed some basic rules for the group, why they meet and what they will do - professionals call these 'terms of reference'. They are a group of young people aged 11 - 19 years from across the county; once they are more established, I will ask them to post something here on this site.
With the help of the youth service, the 'Big Bruvver' project that I've talked about before has been moving across the county - two more to go and every area will have had the chance to have had their say! The next event is in Hednesford on Fri 19th October - look out for it!! The last diary room will probably be held in Tamworth quite soon after this, as sadly the life of the 'bus' has come to an end.
In September, I went to a large meeting (conference) at Windsor, to talk with other professionals about children's rights. This was extremely useful as I once again met with Sir Al Aynsley Green, England's Commissioner for Children. One of the issues we discussed was the Mosquito devise - Sir Al is now as keen as I am to get rid of them once and for all! Watch this space, as I will keep you updated here.
During September, I attended a celebration evening for those children and young people who are in care. It was a great night, with over 100 young people collecting awards, which were presented to them by Kirk from Coronation Street!
I've received some very exciting news about funding, which means that I am able to employ 2 young people! I will put an advert here and in the papers - these jobs will be about encouraging and helping other children and young people have their say over issues that affect them - 1 job will be specifically about making this web site more fun, interactive and allowing 'virtual' friends to have their say!
On Friday 23rd November, the Office of the Children's Commissioner, 11MILLION is campaigning for 'Takeover day'. This is to give children and young people the opportunity to take over their business or organisation for the day! Here in Staffordshire, children in care will take over the County Council's Corporate Parenting Panel (which I talked about last time). This will give both the adults and young people a better understanding of the processes and how this affects them, it should be really exciting; I'll feed back to you in my next blog.
If you want to do something in your area - here is the link to the information pack: 11 MILLION (Staffordshire Children's Trustis not responsible for the content of external websites linked from this page.)
I'm off now to visit a resource centre for children with disabilities - they've been working hard with other young people to develop their versions of Staffordshire's Children & Young People's Plan. Once it's printed, I'll post it here……………….
