Blog 29.06.07.
This month has been the usual busy one, mainly focused on writing my annual report, so by my next blog, it should be published on this site.
You may have also noticed that the latest version of Staffordshire's Children & Young People's Plan has been refreshed. Last year, two versions by young people for young people were developed, published and a questionnaire was sent to out to find out what others thought of it. Almost 200 responses were received and these views have been included in this version, which is available on the Children's Trust web site, or you can use the link here: /cypp/
Section 58 of the Children Act is currently being reviewed, to examine the effects of this piece of legislation, how it's administered and to make recommendations for changes. Section 58 is about corporal punishment - in the simplest of terms - smacking. Section 58 still allows for parents to punish their child and offers guidance about the severity of assault, based on marks and/or bruising. The closing date for responses is Friday 10th August, 2007 and you can view the documents on line and also respond on line; the link is here: http://www.dfes.gov.uk/consultations/conDetails.cfm?consultationId=1494
Another meeting that I attend looks at homeless issues for young people across Staffordshire. The Youth Offending Service are leading on this piece of work, which very much involves workers from lots of different agencies, such as Health, Education, Housing, Connexions etc. A new worker, Neil MacLeod has been appointed to lead on this exciting partnership project. As this progresses, I will update you.
The Corporate Parenting Panel, which I've mentioned before is a monthly meeting, made up from a group of Councillors who take their responsibilities very seriously. They consider the issues for children and young people who are being looked after by the local authority and undertake regular visits to children's homes across the county. Topics have included the safety of children and young people, mobile phone and internet safety, young people who go missing, provision of education to these young people, as well as examining every report from the councillor's monthly visits.
Ah well, back to the Annual Report……………………………………………………
