May 2008 blog!
The Children in Care council is now up and running and members are steaming ahead with lots of suggestion about what they want to do and achieve. This month they had a presentation from the IT team about a 'virtual' council and how this would look and work. It would be so useful for ALL children in care and would mean that everyone could keep in touch though their own social networking site.
I'll keep you up to date with progress, but hope that his will be up and running by Autumn.
The 'Big bruvver' project won a national award and I went to the presentation in Islington, London with Alf Wilson, Area Commander for the Moorlands and Cllr Robert Simpson, cabinet lead member for children and young people. The award is for 'service user involvement' and reads" Innovative in title and delivery, this service demonstrates how participation is based on really listening to what young people want". Congratulations to everyone who has been involved in and supported this successful project. Below is the final paper and copy of the award which is sitting on my office shelf in pride of place!

A half day event at Yarnfield made me aware of the impact on climate change and how much work the county council is putting into this - for anyone who's curious about this - here's the link to the strategy.

At the end of the day, every individual officer was asked to make a 'pledge' - how they would do their 'bit' to contribute to the bigger picture. My pledge is very simple, that I will ask everyone in my building to coordinate stationary to ensure that we have only 1 big delivery for everyone, rather that lots of little orders as we do now!
The last day of the month launched the Children and Young People's Plan at Alton Towers - about 40 children and young people joined VIA, the shadow trust board - they then had time to go around the park afterwards. Here's a photo of the launch.

Next month, some members of VIA will take the plan to cabinet to jointly sign it off and let members know about their work and findings. I'll let you know how it went in my next blog.
