November 2009!
Over 200 young people came together to look at solution to issues that they have raised over the last three years. The county's top decision makers, county councillors and outside people of importance came to work with the young people to look at ways of changing things. The topics debated were:
- Transport - the cost and reliability
- Bullying - including 'virtual' bullying
- Lack of things to do - variety, frequency and availability
- Negative images of young people in the media
- Sex and relationships education (SRE) - the quality and what young people really want to know
The workshops were by Youth Action Kouncil (YAK) members with Youth Service Participation Workers and focused on solutions to the problems. For example, a possible solution to the cost of public transport is a 'concession' card - something that the county council wants to try. This would mean that you get to travel at a cheaper rate after school - this would also link to activities, as you could get there more cheaply. If you want to find out about things to do in your area - a new website was launched on the day; go to www.youfind.me.uk for info on what's on in your area!

I went to the workshop around negative images of young people and so did the Editor of the Evening Sentinel! He was really interested and took an active part, suggesting ways to approach local papers and get good news stories across. The SRE workshop came up with some really good ideas and the top issue that most young people want to know information about is around relationships, peer pressure and how to say 'no'. Every young person who attended had a certificate and will also get a feedback flyer, to let them know what progress has been made. I'll keep you posted in this blog, as I will continue to campaign on your behalf.

Well done to everyone who helped make the day a great success!

If you want to know more go to www.speakoutonline.co.uk; Next month should have some great pics and feedback from this event!
