As promised last week, here is my update about the Annual Youth Conference that I attended at the weekend. I took part in a workshop that was organised by members of YAK, Kayleigh, Jamie, Alex and Matthew. The whole thing from start to finish was thought provoking, interactive, fun and a real learning experience. The group have undertaken research, both locally and nationally and are very knowledgeable about their subject - the workshop was professional and they held the attention of the adults for the duration.
I intend to steer the group through the various process that it will take to make this piece of work become a reality and turn it into a policy that will be driven and written by young people.
Mid week, I attended a training session about 'Hear by right'. This was a useful and interesting day and I learned a lot more about children's rights and also what other local authorities are doing to make sure that children and young people have a voice. 'Hear by right' is about setting standards to ensure the active involvement of children and young people and helps organisations assess how well they are doing this. I will let you know more about this as time goes on.
I am attending the UK Youth Parliament Election Event on Saturday; on Wednesday I travel to London to meet with Al Aynsley Green, England's Commissioner for Children. Again, I will tell you more about these in my next 'blog' which will be in two weeks time as I'm taking some time to be with my family next week!
